I’m a stylist from Indiana. I started doing hair as a child. I used to pin curl my mother’s hair and polish her toenails. I tried to get my friends and family to let me do anything I could to their hair. I only had one volunteer. But, to this day, I am still doing her hair. It was a humble start that has led to bigger and better things.
After high school I gave in and went to beauty school. I stayed in beauty school until I got a Master’s License. That was a big deal back then. Since then I have studied with Vidal Sassoon, Martin Parsons, Aveda, Matrix, Redkin, and many others.
I worked in a small town for a while and decided that it just wasn’t for me. So, off to the big city I went to sew some oats and to get a job doing hair. The big city happened to be Miami Florida. I was so naïve. I didn’t know I had to take another state board to get licensed in Florida. So, I did hair on the side. I even did hair for some of the Play Boy Bunnies. They were great, but I still didn’t get a license.
I decided to go back to Indiana and ended up working in a wig store. I did wigs for cancer patients which was really rewarding. When they came to pick up their wigs, the would ask for, “The Day Maker.” And so, I’m a day maker. I always tried to put a smile on their face and help them feel good about themselves.
As the years went by, I moved form salon to salon just trying to find my niche. I even tried owning my own salon. That lasted about 3 years. Hair dressers can be a temperamental bunch. So, instead UI decided to become an independent contractor. What a blessing!
Through the years I have kept up with all of the current trends and techniques going on in the industry.
