Going Green With Hair Color:

I've been on a mission to find a hair color that I was not allergic to and I have finally found it. Color today has way to much ammonia in it.  Tends to burn the scalp and makes you become teary eyed and for some it causes blisters on the scalp. It also stains the skin around your hairline which takes time to get rid of. When this color is applied you can be sure you will not smell anything.
Some clients have never considered a color application because they are concerned about the unnatural looking results. They don't have to worry anymore as this color gives you that beautiful natural-looking  color result. Natural hair usually appears with uneven areas like lighter ends on the crown section or a darker nape area. This color has muti-tonal  principle which adapts to this natural phenomenon and allows for the most natural looking color results. The color range is developed for multiple shade combinations. All tones are intermixable and allow creative compositions and individual creations.
This color also has besides know ammonia, silicones, formaldehyde derivates, parabens, alcohol, paraffin, mineral oils or artificial colorants. They only use pure and natural ingredients to produce formulations that deliver the highest degree of naturalness possible. Everything they use is biodegradable and is from plant based materials.
This color I would use on anybody and it is called ESSENSITY by Schwarzkopf. This color is for anyone who is health conscious, eco- conscious and wants to use products that are natural and have healthy ingredients. For me as a stylist it is the perfect choice. My favorite things about this hair color is it does not bother my scalp and leaves my hair so shiny. The color in this picture says it all.

Treating Dry Hair:

If your hair looks dry and lifeless. This type of hair craves moisture, and in most instances requires a healthy dose of protein. Dry hair needs protection in the form of emollients and lubricants, which will lay down the outside cuticle layer of the hair and create the shine you want. Humectants will attract and retain moisture within your hair. Moisturisers  contain humectants that not only replace lost moisture but actually attract moisture and retain it in the cortex of the hair. Daily shampooing and conditioning with mosturizing and emollient treatments will go a long way toward alleviating a dry, tight scalp, while  replenishing lost moisture and proteins  along the hair shaft. Try using moisturisers, which have humectants in it. Essential fatty acids are great moisturizers. One of the best and most cost effective essential fatty acids is safflower oil. The scalp produces the best essential fatty acid called sebum but sebum cannot reach upto the entire length of the hair, especially if it is long.
Take a few drops of safflower oil in your palms while the hair is dry apply to the ends and then work toward your scalp. By applying safflower oil your dry hair will have the proper amount of humectants to attract and retain moisture. If possible leave in your hair at least 2 hours. Use a moisturizing shampoo  and conditioner on your ends only every other day. Rinse with water alone on off days.. When you're at beach, spread some of the sunscreen use on your body through your hair so that it doesn't dry out and get fried from the sun.

Does Your Hair Color Last?

Once you have gotten your hair colored with your desired shade, the next thing you want to do is make your hair color last as long as possible. There are several things you can do to maximize the life of your newly colored locks and keep it looking  gorgeous and vibrant as long as possible. I have some ideas that may help you  extend the life of your color.
Select the hair coloring product that is most compatible with your life style.  If you don't have time to redo your  new growth every 4-5 weeks, you may want to select a hair color shade that is only 1-3 shades lighter than your natural color.  The closer you go to your natural hair color, the less your new growth will show as they grow out. When your new growth is less obvious, your hair color will last longer before you have to  touch it up. Always select the type of coloring product that is easiest to maintain or what your stylist thinks is best for you.
Apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair a few days before coloring. The better conditioned your is, the easier the color will take and the longer it will last.
Color hair that has not been washed for one day.  The natural oils will assist in making the hair color  application more successful. The color will cling better to hair that is not dry.
Remember what I said about shampoos that have laurel-sulfate in them, they will strip some of your color out with each shampoo. Try some of the organic shampoos like the one I mentioned in my other blog.  At least use a shampoo for color treated hair.
Avoid exposing your colored hair to the sun or chlorine in swimming pools. The sun may fade your hair color and the chlorine will damage the color. If you are a blonde you may get a green tinge to your hair from the chlorine.
Use layered colors to prevent an overall faded color look. The advantage to applying layered color would be to have complimentary shades of darker and lighter colors which would reflect the light and would give your a multidimensional look.

Dandruff: Causes and Treatment

Dandruff  has been named for an annoying and often embarrassing condition characterized by itchy or flaky scalp. What is it anyway, common dandruff is an overproduction and build up of dead skin cells. As our skin renews itself, the top layer of old cells die and come off  and this process takes about two to three weeks. But for some people this process is speeded up. What happens is the scalp increases its production of cells, causing the dead ones to pack together and build up on the scalp resulting in an itchy red scalp. The dead skin slough off as white or gray flakes on our collars and shoulders.
The causes are due to food allergies, allergies to hair care products; a combination of cold weather. low humidity and dry indoor heat; infrequent shampooing and of course that standby by of most health problems STRESS. However dandruff can't be associated with dry skin. Dandruff actual cause is due to over production in the scalp's oil glands and people with an oilier scalp are more likely to have this disorder.
Treatments some of these are natural way not using Head and Shoulders.  The most simple step in treating dandruff is frequent and effective shampooing of the hair and scalp. A more natural way is by mixing 8 tbsp. of peanut oil with juice of half a lemon. Rub the mixture into your hair, leave on for about 10 minutes and then shampoo off. Other things that help this problem is to avoid or decrease your intake of fried foods, dairy products, sugar also chocolate and nuts. Eat a well balanced diet and make at least 50 percent of your diet raw food. I am sure I have busted some of your bubbles but what you take in to your body affects your hair and skin so try to do things in moderation to start with.

Home Remedies:

I have found there are are a lot of home remedies that people use. I've also tried a few of these and some have worked great. Others are not so great because they may be a little messy. When I was at hair show they picked a lady from the audience whose hair was over abused with chemicals and that is when I learned about using honey to put back the elasticity in your hair. They shampooed this woman hair and then scrunched honey thru the hair and left it on probably a good 20 minutes. Then they shampooed off the excess of honey because it liquifies when it touches your hair and it runs. We were all amazed in the difference. I just learned on Pintrest that you mix honey with olive oil and bring to a boil, let cool then comb through hair. This is supposed to help hair grow faster and make it super smooth and shiny.
Our hair can become limp and dull from product buildup. This buildup can even make our hair look dirty, even though it is freshly shampooed. This buildup comes from styling products, too much oil and even from not shampooing and rinsing the hair properly or as often as needed. Once you have have removed this buildup you may find that your hair has more bounce, shine and easier to manage.  Use baking soda and make it into a paste apply to hair when it is wet. Go from scalp to ends making sure you massage into scalp to remove excess buildup around your hair follicles. Allow paste to set for about half hour. Then shampoo and condition but your final rinse will be 1 part apple cider vinegar and 4 parts water this will remove any buildup left in your hair. These are just a few things for us to try.

Product Review: Nioxin

In the blog I wrote about textures and recommend Diamax, this product has worked on so many of my clients. It is perfect for thinning hair. It does not grow it protects what you have. This product increases the hairs diameter which makes the hair look thicker and fuller. It also penetrates  the hair shaft to help strengthen the hair's resilience against breakage. Diamax can be used  daily morning or evening on wet or dry hair, natural or chemically treated hair before you apply any styling products. Nioxin  also has great shampoo for thinning hair and conditioners. Yes, If you are using Rogain you can use this too.

It's A Man Thing!

Back when I was growing up my dad used this stuff called vitailis and that greasy looking stuff kept his hair in place. How things have changed for the men today. Men scalp produces more than twice the volume of oil than a woman, that's because a mans pores are double the size of hers. They may have more scalp issues scalp acne, eczema and if balding basil cells.
Now men are becoming a lot more informed about whats good for them, whether they are going to a Barber Shop or to Hair Salon. In early years they just used a bar of soap to shampoo their with. Now they are using better products and not what the wife uses. You men can also ditch the the dandruff shampoos and turn to something a little more natural that will keep your scalp healthy and clean. Proper hair maintenance for men goes beyond slapping on shampoo and running  a comb through  your tresses. It involves using good products, getting regular haircuts, and taking care of your scalp.
It is ok to shampoo often as long as you are using proper product in your hair, you can shampoo and condition everyday as many times as you need to without any side effects. Just use some common sense if your hair is dry don't use a shampoo  that removes oil, your just drying out your scalp.  There is a myth if you shampoo to often your hair will fall out, but it is not true. If it is going to fall out it is in your blood.
Most men do not use conditioners but what they don't know is conditioners are  necessities  because a healthy scalp means healthy hair.
When it comes to styling products, pliable ones are better to use because gels seem to get hard and stiff looking. Pliable products aren't to stiff and you can move your hair around. Sometimes you'll spend a little more on a product, but you will not half to use half the bottle on your head each time.
Keep your hair cut about every four to six weeks. Be sure to keep unwanted hair off the ears and get that neckline shaved. Some men wax ears it retards hair a little longer. Don't forget your eyebrows they need to be trimmed so that you don't look like Bobby Knight.  One more thing about hair maintenance don't forget the nose, it needs to be trimmed also. Just keeping you in shape hair wise!

Manage Summer Strands

Did you know! Dry hair and frizz go hand in hand. If you hair looks dyed fried and laid aside. Then I would say your hair is parched, it will suck up the humidity in the air, making it swell up and look even more frizzy. It's inevitable that hair will become unruly to some degree in the summer, especially with trauma caused by heat, sun and humidity. Summer hair can be dull, coarse, frizzy and hard to style. Our strands take such a beating during the summer months UV rays, chlorine, salt and humidity take a toll on the hair, resulting in brassy color, shineless strands and brittle locks. The easiest way to get rid of damage is to cut off the affected portions.
Excessive heat can send oil production into over drive because the body tends to produce more sebum as the temperature rises. With all of this oil our body is producing and combined with residue from styling products can leave hair flat and limp. You can reduce the extent of damage by using the right products to protect and repair hair. When we were younger we used lemon juice and other things that would give us those natural highlites from the sun. By the end of summer some of us had either bright orange hair or brassy  that is when we all got our back to school hair cuts.
The first step to good hair care is cleansing and conditioning with the right products. You want to revive and restore hair's elasticity to promote stronger hair and to fight summer stresses. Plus restore hair's manageability and shine while combating the harmful effects of salt and sun exposure. If your hair is really damaged consider using conditioning mask. Before going into water be sure to wet your hair first and spray on a leave in conditioner so your hair doesn't absorb much of the chlorine or salt from the sea. After swimming  be sure to rinse or shampoo hair and then condition, let dry naturally if possible.

Hot Looking Gray Hair

What to do when you see that first gray hair. PANIC!! Do you pluck it out or just ignore it? OK! Now that one gray hair is coming in fast and furious. Do you dye, or highlight or just give up and let it happen to see what it will do for that youthful look you are trying to maintain. Since many people by the age of 50 or before have started to go grey. Most of the baby boomers in an effort to preserve a youthful look, most are choosing to dye.
There are a growing number of women who have colored their hair for years and who are exhausted by the tedium of coloring are now going brazenly and vividly gray. Might that brazen idea be right for you? I think gray or white hair tends to look best with pink, olive and dark complexions. If you are sallow or very pale, you will look  washed-out  and should consider highlights or low-lights. If you have that hair that looks mousy as the gray begins to appear it can be brightened and enriched by weaving in highlights and low-lights. These are three that I might consider using on brown hair a honey blonde or tortoiseshell, or mahogany for darker hair.
Another option you can use if you just starting to the first signs of gray is to use a semi-permanent  glaze. Both will stain a lot of the gray and when the color starts to fade, you won't have a line of demarcation. In other words no root line. You can also add a little gold or red to this and it will give some nice highlights to the hair. If you are uncertain between two colors always choose the lightest.
If your grey comes in snow white with yellow tones you can remedy this by using a violet based gloss, it coats the hair and gives great shine. When hair loses its pigmentation, so does the skin.
After you've finished coloring your gray hair, make sure you only use shampoos for color treated hair because more severe shampoos can strip out the color . If you don't like the results you get then wash your hair more often to remove the dye quicker. If your gray comes in wiry, it's because it's dry,  so use a weekly deep conditioner.

Girls with Curls Coloring Cues

Girls with curls that want their hair highlighted or colored, is not much different than girls with straight hair. The process is the same, but you must gauge the thickness of the weave for coloring or lightening to be in balance with the wave of the hair. If you weave to small of strands you will not even see what you have done because it gets lost in the waves of the hair. When the weaves are to large the steaks look like chunks and are outdated. Don't make her look like a clown.
When your going to color be sure that you first examine the texture, the porosity and the condition of the hair. Then decide what the possibilities are and what technique your going to do.
If you decide to highlight take precautions by definitely deep conditioning that hair because by coloring or highlighting you can damage the weaker parts of the hair. Weaker areas are around the hairline. You should take special care in processing also if you use to strong of a developer or over process the hair will break off in some areas. In coloring curly hair don't use flat shades the results make the hair dull and then you have lost the shine.
Remember that textured hair is always in motion a full color from roots to ends is not necessary to achieve the highlighted look. The lighter color is applied more heavily to the middle of the hair shaft and ends. This looks more natural and you won't have to touch-up as often. It also saves the hair from looking over processed. The key to healthy curly hair is to avoid over processing the hair and also from drying it out even further. Before coloring use a conditioner or protein treatment the color seems to hold better. For in between treatments you can use glosses and glazes but no color gloss. This gives the hair shine and helps to control frizz and gives the hair a healthier look.

Girls with Curls

The world today is so different than when I started as hairdresser. Most girls who had curly hair wanted there hair to be long sexy and straight. Over the years hair styles have revolved around long straight hair and sleek looking ponytails and the shiny bobs. As the world and fashion evolves so does hair, and comes many manes of curls and also variations in texture. Many people believe that curly hair is still a thing of the past. Remember when people wanted the curly look and everyone was getting perms. Even men wanted this curly look. I'll bet that if you ask some of the baby boomers, men especially they would answer yes. I have done many of those perms for men out of my apartment because they didn't want anyone to see them with perm rods in their hair. Now going to a salon is great especially when their stylist is a woman.
In our multicultural world, woman can have many types of hair textures that range from waves, curls and the unbelievable kinks. Textured is naturally drier and more porous. Curly hair often appears less shiny and unhealthy looking because the cuticle is more raised. The twists and turns of the hair strands only reflect light from the arcs of the curls. Now you can style curly hair to give it a new and different look.
There are special techniques that you should know when comes to taking care of textured hair. If you want more of ribbon look, this is achieved by separating each curled section into smaller more defined curls by running a conditioning product down each strand like a ribbon. It gives the hair more shine and definition and to create more volume alternate the direction of every other strand. Always listen to what the girl with curls has to say because she has had this curly hair forever.

Top 10 Shampoos

There are so many kinds of shampoos where does one start.  If you want your hair to do something there is a shampoo for that like creating volume.  Lets at least list some of the top ten shampoos for all the different hair textures that we have. To start with we have shampoos for Dry,Smoothing,Thickening,Volumizing, Moisturising and Curl Enhancing. I don't want to leave out Color Protecting and Damage Repairing and I almost forget shampoo for Oily hair. Now the latest  shampoos is Natural or Organic and that should round off our top ten list.
The  chemicals that are in most of the shampoos today is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or  SLS it is used in a lot of products that we use on a daily basis. For example toothpaste and mouth rinses and most everything that foams. Most people like that foaming action because it means your hair is squeeky clean. The first ingredient in lauryl salfate is salt it is what gives the thickness to your shampoo and gives you that wonderful lather that you get but at the same time it can be drying and damaging to your hair. When I first became a stylist and someones hair would grab the hair color we all kept a bottle of Prell around to help strip out some of the color.  It was the best shampoo for lightening I had ever used. The hair needed conditioning other wise you could not get a comb thru the hair.
I feel that shampoos that contain conditioner are not good for the hair because they contain chemicals that do nothing but coat the hair. Over time is all they do is make the hair dryer. You do not need to condition hair everytime you shampoo only if it needs it. You can over due the condtioning process. There  are so many kinds of shampoos today I know it is hard to choose.
The new generation coming up and some of the baby boomers are looking for more natural or organic shampoos. These shampoos do not contain the chemicals in them that we have used for years and they also do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Most of the new natural or organic shampoos may not lather as well as others. These shampoos should be free of synthetics, parabens and sulfates. They also have a small molecular structure that deeply penetrate bond and repair the hair's cortex while smoothing the cuticle layer of the hair. I would say most of these shampoos contain botanical oils which are highly nourishing to the hair. They also  help to repair damaged hair and it leaves the hair in a silky smooth more manageable. It also puts the shine back that we all need. As we age I do feel that we should use a shampoo that is more gentle to the hair. I've always said when your hair looks good we all have that feeling of confidence with in ourselves.

How To Treat Your Biggest Organ - Your Skin

Skin is the largest organ of the body. You know that what you eat can maintain your enter beauty. If you eat junk food and fatty foods it can show up on your outer body and it also can affect your hair. Just like taking your prescriptions that always have some side effects. If your skin is on the sensitive side that also could mean your hair is fragile. Maybe your hair is fine, thin and sometimes breaks off for no reason. This when you should use more natural products. They will usually give you a full list of ingredients for every product. Most natural or organic products do no animal testing, which to is a complement to there products. Some of these products are brought back years before our time and have given us new treatments that will help prevent aging and give us all what we are looking for in total body care. If you are having problems with your hair maybe your using products that don't work together. For example using a shampoo in one line and then a conditioner from some other line. I personally use products that are in the same line because some things do not work together. If you are using a product to help give you fuller looking hair, then stay in that family using there shampoo and conditioner.

Changes in Hair Texture

Changes in hair texture what happens? As we age  hair changes because we lose the color pigment and it starts turning gray. It usually gets darker before it turns gray. Some of the changes that happen are that the gray that comes in is not as strong and we seem to get thinner in different areas. What is happening the grey hair  that is coming in may not be as strong and will brake off and leave you with  thinner hair. The change in texture happens to more people with fine hair. Everyone I know wants full and thicker looking hair. You can have that because there are products that can give you that full and thicker look. As we know once you stop using any of these products the changes of your hair texture returns to the same way it was.  Maybe you are trying to grow your hair longer and decided not even to trim it. You must use something to make the hair not look stringing while your growing it out to a longer length so lets use something that will give you healthy and fuller looking hair. Using good products,  will also help you keep your hair healthy and keep the split ends from making your hair looking frizzy. Even if you color your hair or use extensions you still want to keep your hair as healthy as possible.
If you lose you hair to illness, when your hair starts growing back the texture of it can be totally different. Your hair might be curly or it can be darker or lighter. Even some people have thinner or more fragile hair. It can be so weak that it breaks off and that usually happens around the face. If your hair does come in weak and the texture is different you want to use products for thinning hair to keep it strong.
Other things that effect the texture of our hair is the drugs we must take to keep us going like high blood pressure medicine and also our thyroid can have effect on our hair texture. What ever we take in to our bodies and what our bodies do not use also comes out thru our hair.  Please stay healthy so you can have that fuller, thicker hair you always dreamed of.

How to Fix Orange Hair

Why would you want to fix orange hair. Some people are born with orange hair but we call it red but is not more orange than red. Coloring our hair can give us orange hair but by using toners or violet based shampoos will calm it down. There are so many different tones of orange why would we want to fix orange hair, unless it does not go with our skin tone.
At breakfast I saw a gentleman with bright orange hair with strands of gold running thru. He was in a wheelchair but what stood out was his bright orange hair with a very stylish cut. I gave him a complement  on his hair and he told me as a kid everyone made fun of his orange hair. He said is proud of it now and I told him that his beautiful orange hair was becoming extinct. As I said why would you want to fix orange hair. If you are coloring your own hair and you picked a color that left you with orange or brassy looking hair. You can use a color wash to drab out the orange or a toner to drab out the orange if you are a blond. On really dark hair you will definitely be getting some brassy to orange tones. Dark hair works better by adding dark red to to give you a pretty mahogany look. I still say when you mix an orange red with a blue red you get such a wonderful shade of red like no other.

Hair I Am

I’m a stylist from Indiana. I started doing hair as a child. I used to pin curl my mother’s hair and polish her toenails. I tried to get my friends and family to let me do anything I could to their hair. I only had one volunteer. But, to this day, I am still doing her hair. It was a humble start that has led to bigger and better things.

After high school I gave in and went to beauty school. I stayed in beauty school until I got a Master’s License. That was a big deal back then. Since then I have studied with Vidal Sassoon, Martin Parsons, Aveda, Matrix, Redkin, and many others.

I worked in a small town for a while and decided that it just wasn’t for me. So, off to the big city I went to sew some oats and to get a job doing hair. The big city happened to be Miami Florida. I was so naïve. I didn’t know I had to take another state board to get licensed in Florida. So, I did hair on the side. I even did hair for some of the Play Boy Bunnies. They were great, but I still didn’t get a license.

I decided to go back to Indiana and ended up working in a wig store. I did wigs for cancer patients which was really rewarding. When they came to pick up their wigs, the would ask for, “The Day Maker.” And so, I’m a day maker. I always tried to put a smile on their face and help them feel good about themselves.

As the years went by, I moved form salon to salon just trying to find my niche. I even tried owning my own salon. That lasted about 3 years. Hair dressers can be a temperamental bunch. So, instead UI decided to become an independent contractor. What a blessing!

Through the years I have kept up with all of the current trends and techniques going on in the industry.

I’m guessing that you’re here to either solve a hair problem or avoid creating one in your future. Whether you’re trying to fix orange hair, fade a bad hair dye job, relax a frizzy perm, or to get some ideas for your next style; my goal is to share what I know to help you look your best and to make YOUR DAY!
